Onyango Renews Contract With Mamelodi Sundowns

Uganda Cranes Captain Denis Masinde Onyango has renewed his contract with South African based side Mamelodi Sundowns.

The club confirmed the development via their social media accounts and website.

“Mamelodi Sundowns and Denis Onyango agreed on a contract extension of four and a half years. The Ugandan goalkeeper is currently the best goalkeeper in Africa having been named in the Confederation of African Football’s Best XI,” reads an excerpt from the website.

Born on May 15, 1985, Onyango is regarded as the best goalkeeper in Africa and recently listed in CAF’s best 2018 team, the only African based player on the list.

The contract extension means that Onyango will spend more than a decade at Sundowns. Onyango joined the Brazilians in 2011.

He has won three league titles and the CAF Champions League title in 2016 as well as the CAF Super Cup the following year.

He started his career with Sharing before joining SC Villa around 2004. He later joined St George in Ethiopia in 2005.

The shot stopper had a four year stint with South Africa’s Super Sport United from 2006-2010. He had stints with Mpumalanga Black Aces before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011.

Onyango is however set to miss out on Uganda Cranes’ last AFCON qualification game against Tanzania on March 22 after picking an injury in Sundowns 1-1 draw with Bidvest Wits.

It should be noted that the Cranes have already qualified for the Egypt show down, achieving the fate with a game to spare. Onyango and Cranes, are yet to concede a goal in the qualifiers.
