Tanzanian Fans and Sports Journalists inclusive, have been told to rally behind their team as they face Uganda Cranes in a crucial upcoming AFCON qualification game.

Tanzania will face the Cranes this Sunday, March 24 at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in the last group L game, with the hosts needing to win to have a chance of making the Africa Cup of Nations set to take place in Egypt in June.

“All am asking for is to continue to support Taifa Stars with prayers for the team to down Uganda Cranes and sail through,” said Paul Makonda as quoted by Citizen, the Chairman of a special committee that was formed to ensure that Tanzania reach 2019 AFCON.

He requested the fans to turn up at the 60,000 seated Benjamin Mkapa Stadium to support the Stars.

He added: “In football, fans are the 12th player for the home team. I therefore call upon you to give Tanzania the support they need to shine on Sunday.”

In addition, he called upon Sports Journalists to help the country’s football authorities in supporting Tanzania, clarifying that they have a role to play, too.

Can Tanzania Qualify?

Tanzania face Uganda Cranes who have already booked their place to Egypt. The Cranes may not be hard against their neighbours but never rest your laurels against a team that is playing with nothing to lose.

Tanzania need nothing but a victory and pray that Lesotho fail to win away to Cape Verde in Praia in a game that will be played on the same day and time.

Table, after 5 games

  1. Uganda – 13 points
  2. Lesotho – 5
  3. Tanzania – 5
  4. Cape Verde – 4.
(With Uganda through, one place is still up for grabs, and all the three teams still have a chance to finish second).

The reverse fixture ended goalless in Namboole and Tanzania will be confident that they can take care of Uganda.

However, Tanzania will be playing and praying with their hearts out in the other group game, in Praia – ball is not in their court, but there is still chance and hope.
