Warriors: Captain Mark Opiyo Not Carried Away With Win Against Oilers

Warriors captain Mark Opiyo Okidi is refusing to get carried away following his side’s 68-66 win over defending champions City Oilers at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The victory sent Warriors joint top, level with UCU Canons, with five wins out of five, but Opiyo believes that his side still has much work to do and will may be celebrate when they beat Oilers when it matters most.

The Warriors, who also beat Betway Power and KIU Titans earlier, managed not to give up before inflicting Oilers their second loss. The side’s other two wins came in the opening games against KCCA Men and Kampala University.

“We have been working hard during the preseason, and we wanted to come back to compete in such games,” said Opiyo during an interview after the game.

“Its a good win for us, but at the end of the day it may mean nothing if we don’t do well in the playoffs. This is just work in progress for us.”

Opiyo led by example against City Oilers as he scored a team high 18 points on 16-of-17 shooting on the field. He has now averaged 14 points this season for the Warriors.

On the night, Warriors capitalised on a good bench that produced 23 points against Oilers’ which managed just 14.

“We have confidence in each other, how much we ball to get better everyday. Whatever the case it may be, I believe my troops are ready to compete.”

Explaining on how they managed to fight back from ten points down going into the last quarter, Opiyo clarified:

“It was more about energy, we kept pushing each other, it turned up a notch a little bit.”

When asked to speak about how big the victory against Oilers is, he briefly said:

“It’s one win, so there are many games still to come. Oilers will come back more stronger and I don’t want anyone to underestimate them.”

Warriors who had ealier beaten up on KCCA, Kampala University, KIU Titans and Betway Power, will face Falcons on May 12 in a game they are expected to win with ease.
