NBL: Mabenzi Stars As Falcons Pick Second Win

Sunday, May 26
Falcons 78-66 Kampala University
(18-14, 24-7, 15-17, 21-28)

Andrew Opio, commonly known as Mabenzi in the Basketball circles, engineered Falcons’ victory over Kampala University in an entertaining NBL encounter at YMCA Court in Wandegeya, Kampala.

Falcons won 78-66 in one of the five league games played on Sunday.

Playing his third game for the joint record winners, Mabenzi filled the stat sheet with 14 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in a commanding performance.

He shot 6-8 from the field before fouling out in an intense and physical game that started about an hour and half behind the schedule after being delayed by rain.

Mabenzi was previously tipped to sign for Oilers at the start of the season before the deal failed to ripe. He has played for Sharing Youth, City Oilers and Gulu Hawks among others.

Henry Mbazira (15), Vinny Jurua (15) and Dickson Asiku (13) also reached double figures for Falcons who got their second win of the season. They had beaten up on Our Saviour 62-59.

Falcons came into the game on the back of a 57-61 loss to JKL Dolphins, won the first two quarters against Kampala University 18-14 and 24-7 in that order before holding on to seal a deserved win.

Kampala University will rue their lack of quality in depth after getting just one point from their bench compared to Falcons’ 25.

Ahmed Kassa scored 19 while Mugisha Moses and Patrick Seduge had 17 and 14 points respectively for the University side.

Falcons will return to league action on May 31 against Betway Power before ending the regular season against UCU Canons on June 2.
