JKL Lady Dolphins managed to overcome a resolute UCU Lady Canons side and seal a hard fought 77-66 win in a second round NBL opener at Indoor Arena in Lugogo.

UCU were on course to break JKL’s unbeaten run but the reigning champions, trailing 47-53, fought back and scored 30 points while limiting UCU to just 13.

It was a combined effort from Henry Malinga’s team as five of the players scored in double figures – Flavia Oketcho and Jamila Nansikombi came off the bench to collect 14 and 12 points respectively.

Hope Akello had 14, Rita Imanishimwe shot an ugly 3-14 from the field but collected 13 points and Peace Nakirijja added 11 points for JKL.

The Lady Canons were poor on the free line as they shot 8/21. The side also turned over the ball 20 times and its bench produced just 14 points compared to JKL’s 37.

UCU looked favourites at the start as the team connected on the offense, thanks to Sarah Ageno and Abei Priscilla who ended the day with 12 and 17 points in that order, but the side failed to hold on.

Brenda Kayaga shot 6-13 from the field to garner 16 points in her best season’s performance but lacked enough strong cast to stop JKL.

Hope Akello (12) named player of the match.

This was UCU’s second loss this season, as they had lost to JKL in the first round. They will look for resuscitation on June 16 against Nkumba Lady Marines.

JKL on the other hand, twelve wins from as many games, will seek to keep their unbeaten run on track on Sunday June 9 against Nkumba before facing UMU Ravens.
