Uganda’s U16 girls Basketball team, the Junior Gazelles, will be seeking to get off the mark when they face Tanzania in the FIBA Africa U16 Zone five championship.

The week long regional competition, for both girls and boys, tipped off on Monday and will run up to June 15 at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

However, the competition has been highlighted by a low turn up with Egypt and Ethiopia withdrawing at the last hour, leaving Uganda (boys and girls), Tanzania (girls) and hosts Rwanda (boys and girls) as the participating teams.

Uganda’s U16 girls team face Tanzania who not only beat but shocked Rwanda in the opener thanks to Mollel Catherine who scored 32 points and 21 rebounds as TZ won 74-63.

The side coached by Roger Sserunyigo and Harriet Lubowa, will be targeting nothing but victory.

“They played a good game against Rwanda, they have good players but my players can outweigh their entire team,” Sserunyigo exclusively told this website. “It will be tough but we can beat them if my girls can sustain the energy in all the four quarters.”

“We have not rested since we arrived, we had a light training and we will have simple drills early morning before resting for the game at six (6PM).”

Uganda who had camped at Africa Bible University before making the trip to Rwanda, will put their trust in mainly Mary Najjuma and Shilla Lamunu.

The Girls teams are fighting to reach the 2019 FIBA U16 Women’s Championship that will be hosted in Rwanda from July 26 to August 4. Rwanda are guaranteed of place because they are the hosts, and the tussle is between Uganda and Tanzania.

For the boys, they are fighting for a ticket to men’s AfroBasket U16 finals tournament which will be held in Cape Verde. Uganda’s boys team is coached by Ronnie Mutebi (Warriors) and Brian Wathum (KIU Titans).
