UCU Lady Canons forward Zainah Lokwameri has said that her team will improve slowly up to the required standards.

Zainah, was speaking to this website after the team’s laboured 53-43 win over Nkumba Lady Marines in a league game played on Sunday at Lugogo.

UCU had a slow start in a tight game despite Nkumba missing their star player and captain Brenda Ekone on the day. The Lady Canons led by four points (43-39) after the third quarter but managed to scrap through after a dominant fourth (10-4) to win the game.

“We fought hard,” started Zainah. “I can’t say that we played to our best but we managed to get the result we wanted. We started sluggishly but we managed to catch up, but a win is a win any day.”

“We came with a wrong attitude, they gave us a big challenge and them having no Ekone meant that they had to play with nothing to lose.”

This was UCU’s ninth win of the season in eleven games – both losses coming against their great rivals in JKL Lady Dolphins who happens to be the defending champions and favourites to win again.

Zainah, averaging 12 points and eight rebounds has been the pillar of the team together with Sarah Ageno but they looked the second best in their loss against JKL Lady Dolphins down the stretch as Henry Malinga capitalised on Flavia Oketcho’s experience to remain unbeaten.

“We lack maturity as we still have youngsters who are still learning, we are working hard and we will improve with time,” Zainah added.

Maimuna Nabbosa led the way with 16 points, Sarah Ageno and Sarafina Dricula contributed 7 and 6 points to seal a hard fought win against Nkumba Lady Marines.

Maimuna Nabbosa is the new kid on the block.

The Lady Canons return to action next Sunday against Angels Basketball at YMCA court in Wandegeya.
