Zone Five U16: Junior Gazelles Crowned Champions

Uganda’s junior Basketball girls team, the Junior Gazelles, were crowned winners of the Zone five Africa U16 Championship held in Kigali, Rwanda.

The team swept both Rwanda and Tanzania to clinch the title and most importantly qualify to the FIBA Africa U16 Championship that will also be hosted in Kigali on August 26, 2019.

On Saturday, the girls beat Rwanda 74-49 (16-8, 22-10, 18-13, 18-18) to clinch their fourth win from as many games.

Shilla Aber Lamunu scored a game high 29 points but it was Maria Majjuma who takes the headlines with 20 points and 42 rebounds.Regina Ajuma also had a double double of 11 points and 17 rebounds.

“We are happy to qualify to FIBA championship, all the girls have made the country proud as Rwanda and Tz were left amazed with the performances,” coach Roger Sserunyigo told this website on Saturday.

“Am proud of my team because they executed well at offense and defended well. But we have to do a lot of work like shooting better and more ball skills.

“We Need bigger/taller girls on the team. I only had two but they filled in a huge gap.”

Rwanda managed to get the other ticket in the boys category at the expense of Uganda’s Junior Silverbacks.
