Elgon Cup: Rugby Cranes Coach Seguya Defends Selecting New Faces

Uganda’s Rugby Cranes coach Robert Seguya has defended his decision to name six debutants on the 23 man squad for Elgon Cup.

Uganda will face Kenya on Saturday, June 22 at the Momboleo Stadium in Kisimu, Kenya before the second leg at Kyadondo in July.

Defending the policy which backfired last time in the Elgon cup, Seguya praised his young stars and noted that this blendy of new and old will spur Uganda to success. He however noted that the selection process gave him sleepless nights.

“I believe in them 100%, they are here to play for their country and I support them, they already know what is at stake,” Seguya said on Tuesday after the official naming of the team at Kyadondo.

“We may not have too much depth, but it’s about giving everyone a chance, I don’t want to judge a player without giving him a a chance.

“If those of last year blundered, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be the same case this time again. We have to keep going. We fall, stand, until we stand. I believe in the boys and they will deliver.”

The new faces include Daudi Ssemwami who vies his trade with Kenya Harlequins, Ronald Kanyanya, Jordan Bongomin, Joseph Kagimu, Paul Masendi and Maxwell Ebonga.

Seguya, on overall selection, clarified that he considered the players’ defensive aspects, confidence and individual brilliance.

“It was a long process for me to zero down to 23 players because the whole initial squad where good and improving steadily, actually it took me two sleepless nights trying to finalise the cut especially the back line players.”

The team will be captained by Asuman Mugerwa, and Uganda will be looking to break a six year jinx (since 2012) since they last won an Elgon cup tournament.

Uganda’s contingent is expected to leave on June 20th in a bid to buy an extra day to acclimatise with the weather in Kisimu given that this is the first time for an Elgon Cup (Kenya leg) to be played outside Nairobi.
