Mutebi, KCCA FC Hungry For CECAFA Kagame Cup Success

KCCA FC will be traveling to Rwanda on Wednesday to take part in the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup due July 6-21.

The reigning Uganda Premier league Champions were pitted in group B with Azam (Tanzania), Mukura Victory Sports (Rwanda) and Bandari (Kenya).

The Lugogo based side was the first Ugandan club to win the CECAFA cup when they beat Tanzania’s Simba SC in 1978. They went on to lose to Kenya’s Abaluhya 1-0 the following year.

Since then, CECAFA has always been so close yet still far for KCCA FC.

“We are proud to be part of this year’s CECAFA tourney,” said Coach Mutebi in a briefing held on Tuesday at StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo. “It gives us a platform where we can continue developing the players.”

“We want to develop our club, we have been one of the best in the region for about the last four years.

“We want to go there and win, I have good players and it has become a responsibility for them to win. We will be facing good teams and every body is there on merit. We want to go there and win, we don’t want to be passengers.”

The last time KCCA FC played in CECAFA, they finished third after defeating Sudanese side Khartoum 2-1 at the Tanzania National Stadium thanks to goals from Michael Birungi and Muzamir Mutyaba.

SC Villa has won the CECAFA three times – They beat Al Merreikh in 1987, APR and Simba in 2003 and 2005 respectively.

Police is the other Ugandan team to win the regional tourney when they edged Moro in 2006. URA FC were beaten finalists in 2007 and 2008 against APR and Tusker in that order. Express lost their two finals in 1994 and 1995 to Al merreikh and Simba respectively.

However, the tourney according to many has come at a wrong time with some clubs having players with their national teams in Africa Cup of nations.

Despite missing Allan Kyambadde, Timothy Awany and Patrick Kaddu, Coach Mutebi believes that he still has enough armoury to triumph in Rwanda.

Samuel Kato, Sadat Anaku and Jurua Hassan are the three of the six promoted youngsters to the senior team that will be heading to Rwanda with the team.

KCCA FC Fixture:

July 9 – Azam
July 12 – Mukura
*All their group games will be played at Huye Stadium.
