Netball: First Lady Flags Off She Cranes Amidst Financial Concerns

Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports who also doubles as the Country’s First lady Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni has on Thursday, flagged off the National Netball team for the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019.

The function was held at the State Lodge Nakasero where the She Cranes team together with the Netball Federation Executive were present.

The soft speaking First lady handed over the country’s flag to the acting Captain Lillian Ajio in absence of foreign based Peace Proscovia who the team will find in England.

While handing it over, the First lady emphasized the importance of praying to God in order to find an easy path in the most competitive tournament in the sport of Netball.

The first lady also congratulated the team for qualifying to this competition.

“We are truly proud of the Cranes both the men and the She Cranes because you have put Uganda on the global map. I know that you have been there before, you have defeated many big name sports groups and I trust that our prayers will not be in vain.”

Ajio after receiving the flag, said that being flagged off bye the First lady brings a lot of morale as the mother of the country has blessed them.

Money crisis in the team

Earlier today, there have been reports making rounds that the She Cranes were going to stage a riot like that of the men’s football team demanding the promised $8000 that they haven’t received.

Reports have confirmed that the players have not received it yet but the Federation President Susan Anek while at the flag off told the First lady about the crisis and she said that they are to resolve it although it’s not clear whether the team will receive the allowances before going to England.

On the issue, Ajio noted:

“There are some things aside that we haven’t received yet that the players still want, we are still patient for a positive outcome that will maybe motivate us.”

The traveling contigent to England will be of 25 people with 12 players and is expected to fly out tonight.

Uganda will face England Roses in the opener on July 12 at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool before facing other group D opponents Samoa and Scotland.
