Cricket Cranes: Roger Mukasa Stripped Of Captaincy

Uganda’s senior men’s cricket team, the Cricket Cranes, is expected to name a new captain, sources have learnt.

Captain Roger Mukasa and assistant Brian Masaba have reportedly been relieved of their duties.

The development comes as the team continues with the preparations for the coming 2019–21 ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League.

All rounder Hamu Kayondo, Kenneth Waiswa and Challengers’ Shahzad Kamal are front runners to fill the void.

The Cranes have been training for about three weeks now, under the tutelage of coach Steven Tikolo whose job is also under close scrutiny.

Arm Band Heavy For Mukasa?

A captain is as good as his team, and Mukasa’s form has deteriorated in equal proportions with that of the National team.

There is no doubt about Mukasa’s batting abilities, but he has been a shadow of himself since he was given the captaincy.

He replaced Davis Arinaitwe Karishani, during a bad time, when Uganda had just been humbly demoted to Division IV on home soil.

His first assignment was to revive the lost glory, which he did in his first tourney in 2018 when he led Uganda to Div IV triumph in Malaysia to return to Div III.

However, since then. All has been saddening, to say the least.

The poor form was recently highlighted by the ICC T20 World Africa League finals where Mukasa only averaged 7.75 runs from four games as Uganda settled for a miserable fourth place on home soil.
