Rukare Promises To Mend Relationship Between NCS, UOC

New National Council of Sports (NCS) chairman Donald Rukare says that he will use his new status to mend the relationship between NCS and Uganda Olympics Committee (UOC).

Rukare was appointed by new State Minister for Sports Hamson Obua to head NCS for the next two years after the end of Bosco Onyik’s tenure.

Rukare will relinquish his post as Uganda Swimming Federation but the law permits him to remain as the General Secretary of UOC.

“It was a bit of surprise of me,” Rukare, speaking during NBS the Score, reflected on the appointment. “I have to thank the Minister Obua and Madam Janat Museveni for showing confidence and giving me the opportunity to serve sports.”

There has been a cold war between UOC and NCS since the past days of Jasper Aligaweesa and Francis Nyangweso, specifically stemming from who is the boss of who, who should organise teams ahead of events among others.

When asked to comment about the matter, Rukare said:

“I think the relationship between the two bodies has greatly improved, and I want to use this unique opportunity to bring NCS and UOC together. Some countries like South Africa have worked towards merging the two bodies merged.”

Rukare and his NCS team has its work cut out for the next years. The rows amongst federations, imbalance in funding, problem of infrastructure will be some of what they will have to look into.

“It’s not going to be an easy ride,” added the new chairman. “We are going to first all meet, known each other, draft a key agenda and start the work.

” I want a council (NCS) that is fully committed, that will promote sports policies, able to take all sports stakeholders on board, have clear benchmarks for what we intend to do among others.”
