Fred Mugerwa: She Cranes Coach Handed Two-Year Contract

She Cranes coach Fred Mugerwa

Uganda Netball Federation has renewed the contract of She Cranes coach Fred Mugerwa.

The announcement was confirmed on Wednesday after the UNF EXCO Metting at the Federation offices in Old Kampala.

Mugerwa will be getting a monthly salary, contrary to the previous contract when he was appointed back in October 2021.

This ends earlier speculations that started when Mugerwa lifted lid on his contract situation just when the team returned from the Netball World Cup in South Africa.

Then, Mugerwa who had helped Uganda beat South Africa’s Proteas to finish fifth at the World Cup, said that he had never received a coin.

And he openly threatened not to renew his contract because of unpaid salaries and disrespect.

Addressing the press on Wednesday, UNF President Sarah Babirye Kityo said that the Federation will make arrangements on how they will clear Mugerwa’s arrears.

“We are so happy that he has agreed to renew his contract despite the challenges that he still demand some money from the Federation,” Babirye said.

“But he knows, he has been part of us and he knows what has been going on and what we have been going through.

“It’s good that he has not dumped us despite the fact that there were other Countries who were offering him better than we have.

“And we have agreed that we will be paying him a Salary for the new contract but also make arrangements to keep giving him the arrears – We are not giving him one lump sum, we agreed that if we get something small we shall give him that until we finish all his money.”

Babirye described Mugerwa as a “darling” to so many and “great mentor, very technical and knowledgeable.”

She added that it would have been bad if the Country lost Mugerwa because this is when “we needed him the most.”

“I have come with an understanding with the Federation and they have promised to keep on paying me as we continue working,” an excited Mugerwa said.

“They (UNF) have told me their situation and are willing to pay my arrears which they have promised to pay in installments.”

It’s been a good spell for the She Cranes under Mugerwa as the side achieved fifth place at both Commonwealth Games and in Birmingham and Netball World Cup in Cape Town.

Mugerwa also takes the credit for transforming Haniisha Muhamed to a Goal Defender (she can still ably play Goal Shooter), and has since joined Surrey Storm.

Mugerwa will switch focus to preparing the She Cranes ahead of the Africa Netball Championships in Botswana, funds permitting.
