In a glittering awards ceremony, the 2023 Netball Super League Title was bestowed upon the Champions Prisons on Thursday.

The event was a dazzling spectacle, where players, coaches and other members of the Uganda Netball fraternity alike gathered to celebrate the exceptional skills, determination, and teamwork displayed by Prisons throughout the season.

The momentous occasion was marked by the presentation of the coveted championship trophy, with players and coaches beaming with pride as they received the well-deserved recognition for their outstanding performance.

Prisons beat KCCA 46-41 at Kamokya TLC to win this year’s National Netball Super League on last day of the season with 38 points in April.

In a closely contested title decider and the final encounter of the league, Prisons proved the better side against KCCA who started the day on top.

This, was title number four for the Prison Warders who previously won it in 2009, 2017 and 2018.

“We didn’t get expect to win this championship initially because we lost two games in the first round and all teams were good last season,” said Prisons coach Imelda Nyongesa.

“But we went back to the drawing board before the second round, I knew we had lost just four points from the two losses, I told my players that we can still win the league if we put focus on it. We came out all out, and I am glad we came out on top.”

Nyogesa said that it will be tough for them to defend the title as every other team will be focusing on the by virtue of being defending champions.

David Okiring, PRRO (Sports) at Prisons Headquarters, representing the Commissioner General of Prisons, handed over the title to Prisons in an event held by Uganda Netball Federation at Climax in Makindye.

UGISA, the champion of Division two, and WOB who won the Men’s Division, also received their titles.

UNF Acting President Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso said that they have used the ceremony as a Marketing tool.

“We have used this event as a strategy, we wanted to create awareness about the league and the Federation activities especially to those who do not always attend the league games,” Byekwaso said.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank all the winners for their efforts, and to the teams who didn’t win, to come back stronger and give us a better and competitive season ahead.”

The new season of the Uganda Netball Super League will throw off on October 27th, pending release of the Fixtures.

Byekwaso added: “We have already written to the sponsors and we hope that they come through so that we have a successful league.”

Byekwaso also urged players and coaches to stay away from the ongoing Politics, and concentrate on playing the game of Netball.
