Uganda Hockey Cranes Off to South Africa

The Uganda National Men’s Hockey team, the Hockey Cranes, has been flagged off to South Africa for the upcoming Africa Olympics Qualifiers set to kick off on 29th, October at the Tuks Astro in Pretoria.

The travelling squad is the same team that represented Uganda at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana except for Mathias Akanyihayo who is making his national team debut.

The Hockey Cranes will be under the tutelage of Innocent Raskara who was named interim head coach early this month, but the team will be captained by Wananchi’s Emmanuel Baguma.

Baguma will be assisted by his Wananchi teammate Bosco Ochan who is the Cranes goalkeeper and Kampala Stallions’s Stewart Kavuma.

Thomas Opio, the current leading goalscorer in the league will lead the team up front alongside Brian Bayuule as the only recognized strikers.

Uganda is pitted against Nigeria, Zimbabwe and hosts South Africa in Pool A.

The East Africans will open the campaign against Nigeria seeking to exact revenge on the West Africans.

When these two sides met at AFCON last year, Uganda came out on a wrong side of a 10-3 spanking.
