Preview: King David on URA Wheel

David Obua will take charge of his maiden Uganda Premier League appearance as head coach of URA as the side welcome newcomers Kitara in Lugazi.

The former Uganda Cranes captain assumed the role, succeeding Sam Timbe who passed on.

During the interim period, Assistant Coach Fred Muhumuza led the team in six games, securing nine points.

Obua’s first assistant, Peter Byaruhanga, praised for his captivating play for those who watched him play, is also part of the coaching staff.

“I’ve been with the lads for five days, and they’ve responded well,” said Obua ahead of the Kitara game.

“The mood is good, and I aim to start my journey here on a winning note. We’re well-prepared for Kitara FC, and being at home will be a significant boost for us.”

Former Hearts (Scotland) and Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa) player Obua, who also played for Express and Police locally, is known as a dedicated and passionate coach.

His previous role as Maroons assistant coach had limited documentation of his time and work.

It remains to be seen if Obua provides the spark for URA who are still searching for a fifth league title since the 2010/11 season.

Kitara, following a 1-0 loss against Maroons, faces a challenging match against URA.

That loss ended Kitara’s unbeaten run this season, prompting strategic adjustments by head coach Brian Ssenyondo.

The upcoming game against URA poses a significant challenge for Kitara, considering the superior player quality of the opposing team.

Despite Kitara’s massive following, even in away games, the match at Luzira remains tricky.

URA beat Kitara 3-2 at Kavumba in their only league meeting thanks to goals from Steven Mukwala, Brian Majwega and Shafic Kagimu.

Denis Monday and Robert Kyamanywa scored from the spot each for Kitara who hosted their games at Kavumba then.

The second round fixture was not played due to the Covid-19 surge then, in a season where Kitara were eventually relegated.
