Uganda’s basketball giants, the City Oilers, have secured a spot in the 2024 Basketball Africa League (BAL).

The Oilers clinched a decisive 72-61 victory against Burundi’s Dynamo in a thrilling BAL Elite 16 semifinal clash on Saturday, held at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

This triumph propels the Oilers into the Elite 16 final, earning them a coveted place in the BAL.

The finalists, alongside the third-placed team in the Division East, will compete in next year’s BAL, scheduled across four African cities.

Robinson Opong (17), Titus Lual (14), Parish Petty (14), and Germaine Roebuck (13) emerged as the top scorers for the Oilers.

They are now set to encounter hosts Cape Town Tigers in Sunday’s ultimate showdown, after the South Africans beat COSPN 67-63.

City Oilers limited Dynamo to only five points in the first quarter, where they took a commanding 19-5 lead. Despite Dynamo’s resurgence, cutting the deficit to 7 points at halftime, they maintained this margin throughout the third quarter.

In the opening exchanges of the fourth quarter, Oilers’ lead was trimmed to four, but the team regained momentum and never relinquished their advantage.

Deshaun Lamar was a standout contributor with 15 points, being the sole Dynamo player to reach double digits. Christopher Obekpa failed to score, while David Deng Dikong managed only 4 points.

Although Oilers only amassed five points from their bench and were out-rebounded 59-48, they managed to do just enough to secure the victory.

This achievement marks a flawless streak of four victories in as many games for Mande Juruni’s squad, having previously conquered COSPN (Madagascar), JBC (Zimbabwe), and Ferroviario da Beira (Mozambique) in the group stage.

They return to the BAL stage for a second season in a row, having secured last season’s ticket via a third place victory against Burundi’s Urunani.
