Maroons FC held Vipers SC to a 1-1 draw at Luzira grounds, squashing the Venoms’ opportunity to claim top spot of the Uganda Premier League (UPL) table on Wednesday evening.

Fred Amaku put the hosts ahead in the 34th minute, finishing off a rebounder from Fabien Mutombora’s initial save, but Vipers’ captain Milton Karisa leveled matters in the 51st minute of the game.

Karisa’s goal was only his second this season, as Amaku’s was his sixth for the Prisons Warders this term.

Before scoring against Vipers, Amaku has so far this season also found the back of the net against SC Villa, Kitara, Mbarara City and KCCA twice.

The Maroons’ reliable striker is now fourth on the UPL top scorers’ chart, only behind Bright Stars’ Nelson Ssenkatuuka with eight goals, plus BUL’s Alex Kitata and KCCA’s Muhammad Shaban with seven goals each.

The Wednesday result implies that BUL stays top with 26 points from 11 games, while Vipers maintain second position with 24 points.

The Venoms would’ve gone top of the table on goal difference had they won their game against Maroons to go to 26 points.
