National Hockey League Set For Pulsating Climax

The closing games of the National Hockey League takes center stage this weekend as both divisions (Men and Women) wrap up the 2023 season.

The Women’s division is all but decided! Kampala Swans who have never won this league are the champions in waiting. They lead the table standings with 35 points, three ahead of second placed Weatherhead and boss a goal difference of 69.

For KHC to be denied their maiden league title, Weatherhead who face Wananchi HDF need to score 37 goals and ensure that the leaders lose to Makerere. Mathematically, this is a possibility, but realistically, the chances of this happening are zero.

Drama however, will be witnessed in the Men’s division where defending champions Wananchi and table leaders Weatherhead are toe to toe.

Weatherhead have led the table standings for the majority of the season. They head into the final day as leaders still, but like it’s been for the most part of the campaign, they lead just on goal difference.

While none has lost a game this season, the two are separated by a difference of ten goals that owing to Weatherhead’s superior goals scored (132) as compared to Wananchi’s 126.

The much anticipated match day pits the leaders against Kampala Stallions while the defending champions will face Rockets.

It won’t be a walk in the park for both sides, but Weatherhead will be crowned champions even without kicking a ball if Wananchi lose to Rockets. That’s because Wananchi play on Saturday while Weatherhead take to the field the following day.

Individually, the race for the Golden Boot is still between the two teams. Both Jordan Achaye (Wananchi) and Thomas Opio ( Weatherhead) are on the top of the charts with 32 goals. Opio’s teammate Collins Batusa is just two goals behind.

In the ladies, Lucky Akello from KHC leads the charts with 23, but Doreen Mbabazi (21) and Anita Atim (19) are hot on the heels.
