In a shocking turn of events at the 2023 AFCON, Equatorial Guinea delivered a stunning 4-0 blow to tournament hosts Ivory Coast in their Group A encounter on Monday.
The Nzalang Nacional’s remarkable performance at Ebimpe’s Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium left the football world in awe.
Emilio Nsue’s impressive brace, along with goals from Pablo Ganet and Jannick Buyla, tore apart the highly fancied Ivorian squad.
Nsue’s double extended his lead on the tournament’s goalscoring charts to five, solidifying Equatorial Guinea’s dominance in the match.
Advancing to the knockout stage as group leaders, despite being level on seven points with second-placed Nigeria, the Nzalang Nacional have established themselves as formidable contenders.
Meanwhile, the defeat leaves the home side’s knockout phase hopes hanging by a thread, finishing third in Group A.
Despite a better start by the Elephants, their lack of accuracy in front of goal proved costly. Nsue’s neat finish on the 41st minute gave Equatorial Guinea the lead heading into halftime. The Elephants’ attempts to bounce back in the second half were thwarted, with VAR denying two of their goals.
Pablo Ganet’s spectacular free-kick in the 72nd minute doubled Equatorial Guinea’s lead, breaking the Elephants’ momentum. Nsue then sealed the deal with a quick counterattack goal immediately after the restart, making it three. Jannick Buyla hammered the final nail in the coffin with a rebounded effort to secure the emphatic 4-0 victory.
The humiliating defeat now forces Ivory Coast to anxiously await their fate, hoping to progress to the knockout phase as one of the four top third-placed teams.
