Video: Gazelles Send Inspirational Messages Ahead of Women’s Day

As International Women’s Day approaches on Friday, March 8, members of Uganda’s Women’s National Basketball Team, known as the Gazelles, have shared messages of encouragement and empowerment.

The messages come from players who compete both locally and internationally, reflecting the team’s unity and determination.

The Gazelles, who recently achieved their best placement ever by finishing seventh at the 2023 FIBA Women Afrobasket in Kigali, Rwanda, are gearing up to celebrate International Women’s Day with a sense of pride and purpose.

The team’s remarkable performance at the Afrobasket tournament has ignited a sense of optimism and enthusiasm among both players and fans alike.

UTEP Miners Forward Jane Asinde said: “Women and Girls can do whatever they want, there is no limit with what we as women can accomplish, Happy Women’s day.”

Zainah Lokwameri who took a break from club basketball this season, commented: “We need to live in a culture that looks up, values, idolises and respects Women as much as the Men. Happy Women’ day.”

Experienced forward Claire Lamunu noted: “It’s okay if you fall down and lose your spark, just make sure that when you get back up, you rise the whole damn fire. Happy Women’s day everyone, and stay blessed.”

UCU Lady Canons centre Bridget Aber started: “Think like a queen, a queen is not afraid to fail because failure is another stepping stone to greatness.”

Other players, including Jannon Otto, Sarah Ageno and Jamilah Nansikombo echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of unity, perseverance, and female empowerment.

Their messages resonate not only with fellow athletes but also with women across the country who are striving to break barriers and achieve their goals.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including limited Government funding, the Gazelles have defied the odds in recent outings.

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, FUBA has organised an All Star women basketball bonanza at the Indoor Arena in Lugogo on Friday under the theme: “Develop Healthy Lifestyle through Basketball and sports in general.”
