Uganda Clinch Double Rugby Gold at 2023 African Games

Uganda emerged victorious in both the men’s and women’s rugby competitions at the 2023 African Games in Ghana.

Making its debut at the games, rugby proved to be a stage for Uganda’s dominance as they clinched gold medals in both categories which were played in a round-robin format

Both the Uganda Sevens (Men) and Lady Rugby Cranes (Women) showcased their prowess by sweeping through the competitions unbeaten.

The Lady Rugby Cranes secured four victories out of the four games to finish top of the file with with 12 points.

They clinched gold on Thursday courtesy of wins over Nigeria and Madagascar. They had beaten Tunisia and Ghana earlier on Wednesday to set the tone for what turned out to be a successful run.

On the men’s side, the Uganda Sevens team mirrored the success of their female counterparts, delivering an impeccable performance throughout the tournament with six consecutive wins.

Uganda had beaten Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, and Ghana before Thursday.

And on Thursday, they opened with another victory over Benin.

And a title was sealed with a game to spare after the Zimbabwe loss against Ghana that ensured Uganda’s undisputed claim to the gold medal.

The men’s team sealed their unbeaten run in emphatic fashion, securing a final victory against Kenya with a scoreline of 21-14.
