FUFA Suspends 13 Over Match-Fixing Allegations

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has provisionary suspended 13 individuals for 90 days amid allegations of match-fixing.

This suspension, effective immediately, involves ten match officials, a former football club executive, a player, and an administrator, all implicated in potential match manipulation activities during the first round of the 2023/2024 football season.

Suspended Individuals:

  • Match Officials: Ali Kaddu, Atuheirwe Joyce, Nabisera Tausi, Geoffrey Sajjabi, Noor Hassan, Muyaga Khalid, Okello Simon Peter, Atuhaire Dorcus, Ichilla Samuel, and Nantantya Godwin.
  • Former BUL FC CEO: Ahmed Kongola
  • Administrator: Epieru Richard
  • Football Player: Kiyemba Latif (Lugazi player)

The action follows alerts received by the Investigatory Chamber of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee indicating that an organized criminal ring had targeted several matches for manipulation to benefit betting activities.

Under Article 77(8) of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code 2023, official investigations were launched against the 13 individuals.

Investigation Findings:

Preliminary investigations have linked the match-fixing activities to a syndicate based in South Africa.

This syndicate, led by ex-convict Hilfiger Mutyaba, also known as Chelsea, orchestrated the match-fixing plot.

Mutyaba, previously convicted for financial crimes in the Virgin Islands, allegedly coordinated the operation, enlisting the help of local criminals.

Mutyaba reportedly recruited referee Ali Kaddu, who in turn approached club officials, players, and other referees to participate in the scheme.

The investigation has identified specific matches between October and December 2023 as targets for manipulation:

  1. Kigezi Homeboyz vs. Kyetume FC (12/10/2023)
  2. Kaaro Karungi FC vs. Calvary FC (12/10/2023)
  3. Rines SS WFC vs. Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC (15/10/2023)
  4. Asubo Gafford Ladies FC vs. She Maroons FC (15/10/2023)
  5. Jinja North United FC vs. Kyetume FC (29/10/2023)
  6. Blacks Powers FC vs. Lugazi FC (02/11/2023)
  7. Kyetume FC vs. Ndejje University FC (16/11/2023)

Next Steps:

In accordance with Article 78 of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code 2023, internal investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the match-fixing activities and those involved.

The 90-day suspension serves as a preliminary measure while these investigations continue.
