KCCA FC CEO, Anisha Shahir Muhoozi has explained that the delays that have been encountered in the completion of the Omondi Stadium, Lugogo have been due to stadium design reviews and changes in order to match current trends.
“Currently, the construction of the first phase of the stadium is complete. We expect to commence the second phase construction work in December 2023 and this is expected to go on until the end of 2024,” the KCCA FC CEO confirmed.
She added: “Also, our biggest challenge is funding as the budget of construction for the entire stadium is 55 Billion Uganda Shillings.”
“We call upon the Government of Uganda to increase funding towards sports infrastructure development for our stadium and other stadia especially now that we have AFCON 2027 looming.”
The stadium is one of the facilities proposed to be used as a training ground for the upcoming AFCON 2027 tournament that Uganda will host with Kenya and Tanzania.
On Monday morning, the Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang was given a tour around the stadium by Anisha Muhoozi and Moses Kaddu Ssekiti (KCCA FC Manager Operations and Administration).
Ogwang commended the progress of the construction work going on and recommended that the construction of the stadium is impressing.
“But, I have tasked the management of KCCA FC to ensure that the duration of the work is according to plan because this is one of the facilities we intend to use as a training ground during the AFCON 2027,” the Minister added.
FUFA President, Hon. Moses Magogo, NCS Chairman Ambrose Tashobya and NCS Secretary General Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel were all present to inspect the stadium on Monday.
The FUFA President commended the management of the club for welcoming current trends in the game and putting them into consideration during the construction of the stadium.
“I commend the management of KCCA FC for considering modern trends and requirements for a stadium befitting to host international tournaments,” the FUFA president said before adding;
“We have been told that there is provision for doping rooms, VAR room, security, media tribune, press conference room, media center, mixed zone, museum among others. As a Federation we will continue to guide and support clubs that have similar initiatives like KCCA FC.”
The second phase of construction of is scheduled to start in December 2023 and is expected to go until the end of 2024.
The construction of the primary stand of the Lugogo Stadium, home to KCCA FC is now at the first phase level.
The capacity of the primary stand is expected to be 7,000 seats after completion and 11,000 seats when the full stadium is complete.
