In a nail-biting semi-final clash at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Nigeria emerged victorious in a tense penalty shootout against South Africa, securing their place in the 2023 AFCON final.

The Super Eagles prevailed 4-2 on penalties after a captivating 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

The drama unfolded as Nigeria appeared to have sealed the win with a late goal by Victor Osimhen, only for VAR to intervene and award South Africa a penalty, which they converted to force extra time and eventually penalties.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero for Nigeria, making two crucial saves during the shootout and securing their passage to Sunday’s final.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who had been a hero in the previous round, was left inconsolable as his team’s AFCON dream came to an end.

Nigeria, now one step away from their fourth African crown, will face either Cote d’Ivoire or DR Congo in Sunday’s final.

With Nwabali’s shootout brilliance propelling them forward, the Super Eagles enter the final as strong contenders for the title.
