Team Uganda Off For Africa Cross-Country Championships

A team of five talented Ugandan athletes, set to compete in the Senior Men’s Category, has been officially flagged off for the Africa Cross-Country Championships slated for the 25th in Tunis, Tunisia.

The contingent, accompanied by two coaches, is geared up to showcase their prowess on the international stage.

Led by team captain Abel Chebet, the squad comprises Ezekiel Mutai, Elijah Cheptoek, Isaiah Kibet, and Levi Kiprotich. Providing guidance to the athletes will be Aggrey Ogol, supported by renowned former World Champion and emerging coach Moses Kipsiro.

Dominic Otucet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), highlighted Kipsiro’s invaluable addition to the coaching staff, citing his stellar track record and inspirational journey from athlete to mentor.

“This year, Uganda has opted not to field female athletes for the Africa Cross-Country Championships due to financial constraints,” Otucet explained.

Despite this setback, the male athletes are determined to make their mark, buoyed by their rigorous preparation and selection based on merit from the National Cross-Country event.

Team captain Abel Chebet expressed confidence in their readiness to represent Uganda with distinction, stating, “We have prepared well and expect to win medals for Uganda.”

In tandem with the championship fervor, the Source of the Nile Marathon has been launched, attracting over 600 athletes. Scheduled for February 25th in Jinja, the 21km race aims to bolster Uganda’s athletic prowess and provide a platform for both seasoned Olympians and aspiring talents.

“We believe we are to have a good half marathon that will aid those who have already qualified for the Olympics and those still striving to qualify,” remarked UAF President Dominic Otucet.

As anticipation builds for both the Africa Cross-Country Championships and the Source of the Nile Marathon, Ugandan athletes are poised to make a resounding statement on the continental and international stages.
