Absa Bank has extended more support to Uganda Athletes who are preparing to represent the country at the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics Games.
While handing over the Sh26m sponsorship cheque to Uganda Olympic Committee during an event at Kabira country Club, Absa Bank Managing Director Mumba Kalifungwa comfirmed that the money will be put to athletes accounts.
The funds are an addition to the first Sh54.5m that had been offered to facilitate the athlete preparation for the games earlier.
“It is an honour that young people are raising the flag high and representing the country on the international stage,” stated Kalifungwa.
“At Absa, we leverage our African identity to breathe life in sports. We believe for Uganda and Africa to grow we need to work together in our capacity to support people leading efforts to raise this bar.
“The pool of highly talented and committed athletes in Uganda needs no introduction and deserves all the support and encouragement they can receive from the stakeholders who are interested in seeing them soar to greater heights.
“At the heart of Absa’s purpose is our commitment to bringing possibilities to life, and our sponsorship of the team presents an opportunity to help these athletes meet their growth ambitions on a global scale.
“I would also like to commend the team for the preparatory work they are doing and motivate them to keep going. Qualifying for the games is an achievement in itself and you have already made us proud.
“Raising Uganda’s flag on the global scale is a true showcase of what we at Absa refer to as Africanacity. I congratulate Team Uganda and wish them all the best as they prepare for Tokyo.”
UOC President Donald Rukare commended the giving heart of Absa and underscored the role of the bank that has not only helped sports to grow but also the society.
Middle distance runner Halima Nakaayi called out more companies to come on board and thanked Absa for leading by example.
Bombers captain Shadir Musa was left speechless with Absa’s timely support ahead of this year’s Olympics Games due July 23 to August 8 in Tokyo.
