She Maroons forward Millicent Namwembe struck the all important goal as her side beat Rines WFC to clinch this year’s FUFA Women Elite League title.
Namwembe who has had an impressive tournament, took responsibility again, netting what would prove to be the winner with just 15 minutes to play.
The goal took her tally to six, making her the overall top scorer of the competition.
The opening minutes of the game saw a closely contested affair as both teams created few scoring chances.
She Maroons were the first to threaten but Lillian Masinde’s effort was comfortable for Rines goalkeeper Elsie Najjemba.
She Maroons, who are known for their possession-based brand of football, struggled to create openings for most of the opening half.
The two sides went into the break deservedly at 0-0.
The Prison based side returned a team with intent and dominated proceedings in the opening exchanges of the second period.
Namwembe tried her luck from a header but saw her effort head wide moments before Veronica Masinde failed to find the target while one-on-one with Rines custodian Elsie Najjemba.
On 75 minutes, She Maroons dominance finally paid dividends as Namwembe lashed onto a Kauthara Naluyima before rounding Najjemba and slotting into an empty net.
Moments later, Masinde could have doubled her side’s lead only to be denied by the post before Najjemba cleared for safety.
Rines never looked like equalizing and She Maroons head-on to register victory which sees them crowned FUFA Women Elite League and walk away with 8 million as the cash prize.
For the Rines WFC, they walk away with 5 million in cash prize.
The two finalists also qualify to play in the FUFA Women Super League next season.
Bunyaruguru Girls who defeated Wakiso Hills in the third place play-off, earlier in the day, finish third.
Important to note is that just as the concluded FUFA Women Super League, the Women Elite League has also been played in a tournament format.
