Former KCCA gaffer Mike Mutebi is being considered by FUFA as the next permanent coach for the Uganda Cranes.
The Cranes job is vacant since the Federation parted ways with Northern Irishman Johnathan Mckinstry in April this year.
The team has since been under the stewardship of Abdallah Mubiru and Livingston Mbabazi as FUFA contemplates on naming a new coach.
Mutebi who was sacked by KCCA FC on March 29, has since emerged as the frontrunner for the Cranes role.
He has unfinished business with the Cranes since his short spell in 2004 when he was replaced midway through the 2006 AFCON Qualifiers.
Mutebi has been linked to Vipers and other clubs in the region but it is understood that he fancies his chances on the National team.
His work at KCCA FC where he led the club to CAF Champions League groups, Cecafa cup, three League titles and Two Uganda Cups among others speak volume.
FUFA boss Moses Magogo has openly admitted his huge admiration for Mutebi, who is a Uefa diploma A holder from Germany.
After the retirement of senior players including former captain Denis Onyango and Mike Azira, the Cranes are braced for the rebuilding process.
Mutebi has a track record of nurturing talent and trusting youngsters, which made him popular at KCCA where he moulded careers of Allan Okello and Mustafa Kizza among others. Its against such a background that FUFA’s choice for Mutebi, if comes to pass, will be based from.
The Federation is racing against time to have a new coach in place before the start of the World Cup Qualifiers later in September.
However, FUFA has reset their targets to project 2026 World Cup.
