When former Loughborough Lightning shooter Peace Proscovia left England for a new chapter in Australia, she had established herself as one of the Vitality Netball Superleague’s most cherished and adored players.
Proscovia’s warm heart, beaming smile and her passion for netball went with her wherever she went, and on court she set the precedent for other shooters to follow.
Between her arrival in 2015 and her departure towards the 2019 season, she helped Loughborough progress to two Grand Finals and take a British Fast5 All-Stars Championship victory.
Individual awards also followed as Proscovia excelled.
Loughborough’s search for Peace’s replacement brought another lesser known Ugandan, Mary Cholkoh Nuba.
Nuba had set local netball alight with NIC Netball club and had a stirring turn at the 2017 World University Netball championships.
For all intents and purposes, she was player in her prime ripe to expose her talent to the grand stage literally.
And Lightning Loughborough found her an ideal heir apparent to Peace Proscovia.
Even though her talent was not a matter of discussion, what provoked much debate was if she had the ability to seamless replace her senior at Loughborough.
The task that awaited her was of enormous proportions.
Impressive Nuba dims Peace Proscovia’s light.
Since joining Loughborough towards the end of 2018, Nuba has been a force to reckon with in the side like Proscovia was.
She has been excelling on the court of play by leading scoring charts coupled with performances that have recruited many admirers from the ranks of doubters.
But Nuba literally surpassed Peace Proscovia’s legacy at the English club wheh she helped Lightning Loughborough win their first ever Vitality Superleague title last weekend.
Nuba and Co. trounced Team Bath 49-32 in the finals with the Ugandan towering shooter scoring a staggering 39 goals out of the 49. Her partner in crime Ella Clark chipped in with only 11 goals.
Overall the 24-year-old Nuba scored a haul of 849 goals which accounts 71% of Loughborough’s goals.
“I am proud of my team but also of my self,” Nuba told the press after the finals.
“It has been a long jounery and I am happy that we have completed it by being champions,” she added.
Nuba took home the Golden Shot award for the the 2021 Vitality Netball Superleague.
Coach Sara Bayman was effusive in her praise for the Ugandan. “She has been of much importance to the team. When ever we need her, she could always deliver the performances.”
