Seven-time record Champions City Oilers will start their NBL campaign with a daunting fixture against Namuwongo Blazers.
The FUBA Competitions Council has released the first round fixture for NBL (Men and Women), the top division of club basketball in Uganda.
The league will tip off on Friday, March 11 before the first round ends on May 22.
As earlier reported by The-SportsNation, the Men’s division will have 13 teams after Warriors failed to register while the Women’s Division will have 10 as it has been in recent seasons.
Victoria University who acquired Sharing Youth will debut in the Men’s while Miracle Eaglets has eagles included in the Women’s after acquiring UMU Ravens slot.
Tropical Royals and Our Saviour are the newly promoted sides in Men division while the Women category remain unchanged after the Women Lower Division league was not played to completion hence no promotion then.
The match between City Oilers, who have won the league seven times in a row, and Nam Blazers, headlines the opening night.
It promises to be a mouthwatering affair after Nam Blazers beat Oilers 71-66 last season on April 17 at KIU Court but FUBA gave Oilers maximum points later on after Blazers used an ineligible player in Geoffrey Soro who had not acquired a playing license.
Basketball Season Is Back!
The season was last played to competition in 2019, with the past two seasons halted midway due to Covid19.
Last year, the league was stopped on June 3rd, when NCS directed FUBA to suspend “with immediate effect” all planned fixtures for the season “until further notice” due to failure to comply with Covid19 guidelines.
Later on, after a greenlight on Sports Resumption, the Federation decided on resuming the season on October 2nd.
However, the move was pending confirmation for at least eight teams for resumption. Each team was asked to pay Sh600,000 to register.
But days later on the deadline, only five NBL (Men) – UCU Canons, Betway Power, UPDF Tomahawks, KCCA Panthers and Falcons – had confirmed registration while two NBL Women teams – UCU Lady Canons and KCCA Leopards had registered, and so the season was cancelled.
