JKL Lady Dolphins small forward Brenda Ekone says she wants to continue scoring this season in the NBL.
Ekone, averaging 19.4 points, leads the scoring charts in the Women’s Division with 233 points.
She scored a game high 22 points (and 10 rebounds) as JKL beat Angels on Wednesday and will once again be the one to look out for as they face off with KIU Rangers on Friday at YMCA.
“Definitely, my individual target is scoring more points so that I can help the team win, I want to keep scoring this season because that has been me,” Ekone told The-SportsNation.
“I also want to improve my game so that I can play as a team player more, as an individual I want to fit in the team because my game is more of individual-based and am not looking at teammates.”
Ekone is a multi-MVP winner and continued with her good form since leaving Nkumba Marines to JKL where she won her first and only championship in 2019.
On her improved totals, Ekone states that she is surrounded with good players and gets enough time to rest during games which was not the case while at Nkumba.
“It’s the team coordination, we play for each other, the improvement can also be credited on the good bench we have,” she explained.
“I can get a breather at least, I believe I have fresh legs every time we are playing compared to before when I had 40 minutes on court (at Nkumba) that even when I am worn out I stayed on Court. The support on the team and coach is what keeps me improving every time as well.”
JKL Lady Dolphins are still unbeaten in the league this season, having won 12 from as many games.
But in KIU Rangers, their unbeaten run will be on the line against a team second on the table with a 10-3 record.
“We are gelling very well, we all know our responsibilities but most important is that we play as a team and for each,” Ekone on team’s winning streak.
“Nothing has been easier, it’s actually getting harder and harder – forexample the UCU Canons game went in Overtime not the blowout we gave them in first round. But we are also trying our level best to stay ready for whatever comes our way and see that we can maintain our unbeaten run.
“We need to improve on our shooting because the shots are not dropping as we would want them to. We sometimes rush out offence and our ball movement.”
