Midfielder Tonny Mawejje has set up two farewell matches to send the former Uganda Cranes icon into full retirement.
The two matches will be played at Lugogo and Masaka in September, with Uganda Cranes current squad facing up the 2017 AFCON team.
Mawejje, addressing the media on Friday, said that the match in Lugogo is because he has played the best part of his career in Kampala.
Then the one at Recreation ground is to give back to his home area where “it all started.”
The entrance fee for Lugogo is Sh20,000 while VIP while go for Sh50,000. Fee for Masaka is uniformly Sh10,000.
He revealed that all proceeds from the two matches will go in helping him start an academy (based in Kampala with a branch in Masaka).
“I will start up an international academy that will groom mainly midfielders,” Mawejje told the press at Lugogo.
Disciplined and a Mentor – Tributes to Tonny Mawejje
Godfrey ‘Jajja Walu’ Walusimbi – “We need to send him off in a good way, and it’s a must attend for we the players because we have to be behind him, he played football not music. He has been a friend and my Mentor at one time. He used to guide me when playing back in the day.”
Hassan Wasswa – “Tonny has been there for most of us. My first encounter with him was during the National U19 team, I was from Buddu and he was the only person who encouraged me that I will make it. He has given a lot to his country, and I urge all footballers to use him as an example because he was disciplined. He is an amazing person and wonderful character.”
George Ssimwogerere – I am the coach who gave Tonny his first opportunity at Masaka LC, it was in 2002/3. Sam Timbe said that he was too young but I insisted and secretly handed him the licence a day before our big match against Mbale Heroes. He came on as a substitute and scored a goal in our 3-0 win.
The ICON
The 35-year-old Mawejje, started his youth football career at Masaka Local Council Football Club and later signed by Kampala Capital City Authority in 2004.
He joined Uganda Police in 2006.
In 2008, he was signed by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) before departing the country for proffesional Football in Iceland in ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar (2009–2013), scoring 10 goals in 106 games.
South African Golden Arrows had earlier acquired Mawejje on loan in 2012.
His other clubs included Haugesund (2014), Valur (on loan in 2014), Þróttur (2014-2016), Tirana (2017-2019) and lately Al-Arabi Sports Club In Kuwait.
Mawejje is capped 83 times for Uganda Cranes and has scored 8 goals.
He played at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals held in Gabon, as Uganda returned to the continental show piece after 38 years.
