Preview: Wankulukuku at Standstill

SC Villa welcome Express in a titanic league clash at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

This Kampala Derby needs no introduction, but in short, it’s the most fiercest rivalry in Ugandan football.

The grudge stems from the fact that SC Villa broke away from Express in 1977 when the Red Eagles were banned by Col Abdul Nasur Governor on suspicion that they were contributing money to finance anti-government activities.

Patrick Kawooya, an Express treasurer by then, used the club’s academy (Nakivubo Boys) to start up a team that was promoted to the league.

And by the time Express returned from the ban two years later, Nakivubo Boys was already in UPL that later changed name to SC Villa!

And the rivalry was born.

Since then, the two teams garnered huge following and success followed, and the fans never see eye to eye.

SC Villa have never hosted games at Wankulukuku which has been the known home for Express, until this season the Jogoos decided to move back where it all started.

They beat Gaddafi 2-0 in their league opener at Wankulukuku and the match against their bitter rivals Express will be their second at the venue.

But Express coach James Odoch, just like the fans and players, will feel that they are more familiar to the stadium than the day’s hosts.

“We have been correcting our mistakes from the past games, I know it’s a derby, and I have a feeling that this is like a home game, most of the players are new at the team and this is their first derby but I guess we can play well and we get the three points,” briefly said Odoch.

With derbies, especially this one, some fans will confess that this is the win that is tantamount to winning a league trophy!

This is the game that can shape everyone’s season, and this is the game that means everything.

Both Odoch (Express) and Jackson Magera (SC Villa) are in their first full season as head coaches of their respective clubs, and they know how significant this game can cement their stay at the team.

The Stats

  • Both teams have collected four points from their opening two games; SC Villa beat Gaddafi (2-0) before a 0-0 draw with Onduparaka while Express drew with UPDF (1-1) before beating URA 1-0.
  • Allan Kayiwa has scored both Express goals this season and will be looking to score in his third straight game.
  • In their last league meeting, Express came from down to beat hosts SC Villa at Njeru; Isaac Ogwang scored for the Jogoos before Amir Kakomo (own goal) and Eric Kambale contributed a comeback.
