Riazat Ali Shah and Kenneth Waiswa were in excellent form on Tuesday as Uganda beat Kenya by 47 runs to exact revenge on their rivals who humiliated them on Saturday in both side’s second game at the Continental Cup T20-Africa.
Both sides were returning from an off day, and Uganda for the first time at this tournament won the toss. Captain Brian Masaba who sat out the Cricket Cranes game against Rwanda on Sunday returned to the team and he chose to bat first.
Simon Ssesazi as usual opened with Roger Mukasa, but as it’s been the case in this competition, did not survive beyond Powerplay. The 27-year-old faced only 4 balls and managed just 3 runs.
Mukasa’s wicket also fell inside Powerplay, but he had already accumulated 34 runs. Like Mukasa, Robinson Obuya also scored a quick 34 that came off 21 balls before he was bowled out by the top wicket taker in this competition Shem Ngoche in the 9th Over.
Uganda lost three wickets in the first ten Overs, but Riazat did some damage to Kenyan bowlers as the Cricket Cranes ensured to set a decent score. Off 31 balls, the all-rounder scored 43 runs. But it is his performance with the ball that destroyed the Kenyans on Tuesday.
The Aziz Damani captain bagged four wickets including Rushab Patel who as an opener faced just two balls.
Waiswa was the other player who enjoyed an excellent game. The former Damani player came in handy with the bat with his 24 runs, but it is his bowling that reminded people of his pure talent.
It was a first time Waiswa was bowling in this tour, and he did not disappoint his captain. The 24-year-old picked the biggest wickets in Collins Obuya and Kenyan Captain Rakep Patel.
Obuya annihilated the Cricket Cranes on Saturday, knocking 96 not out, but Waiswa did not fancy a repeat of that as he sent the Kenyan veteran to the dugout with only 38 runs to his name in the tenth Over.
In that same Over, Waiswa didn’t let Rakep bother the scorers. He ducked the Kenyan captain, and that Over ended in a maiden wicket- the only maiden bowled in the game.
Laurence Mahatlane was forced to alter his team that faced Kenya today after both wicket keeper Cyrus Kakuru and pace bowler Bilal Hassun caught an illness.
The two will be assessed to find out their progress ahead of Uganda’s game against Botswana on Wednesday morning.
