Kenya: Mckinstry, Ugandan trio guide Gor Mahia to 20th League Title

Ugandan trio of Shafik Kagimu, Patrick Kaddu and Peter Lwasa have guided Gor Mahia FC to their 20th Kenya Premier League title.

Gor Mahia, coached by former Cranes coach Johnathan Mckinstry rallied from a goal down to thrash Nairobi City Stars 4-1 at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, hence securing a record-extending 20th league title.

Second half goals from Benson Omalla, Peter Lwasa, Austin Odhiambo ensured that Gor Mahia completed a historical come back.

Samuel Kapen had earlier put the City Stars ahead in the early stages of the second half.

It was a tense ending for Gor Mahia, who won the title by just one point, ahead of their arc rivals Tusker.

And Tusker had to settle for second place on 69 points, one behind Gor Mahia, despite their deserved 4-0 win over Vihiga Bullets at Mumias Sports Complex.

On Sunday, Tusker were leading the title race by half time, following their 2-0 before the break against Vihiga Bullets.

And pressure was on Gor Mahia, who had not found the back of the net before half time.

To make matters worse, Nairobi City stars scored first at the restart through Kapen, to silence Gor fans at Kasarani who turned up in large numbers.

But the Mckinstry’s men made a historical come back, scoring four goals, that saw even Ugandan born forward Lwasa putting his name on the scoresheet.

The win ended Gor Mahia’s title drought ever since 2020.

It was a memorable day for Kaddu and Kagimu, who joined the club in the January transfer window this year.

Gor Mahia will now represent kenya in the upcoming CAF champions League next season.
