National Rugby 7s: Walukuba Stuns Jinja Hippos On Day One

The first circuit of the 2023 Nile Special 7s kicked off in spectacular fashion at Damwaters in Jinja on Saturday 1 July, 2023.

Day one witnessed a thrilling display of rugby action as the 21 different teams battled for supremacy in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.

In the men’s campaign, the pool fixtures witnessed remarkable performances by KOBs, Heathens, Pirates, and Walukuba, who all came off unbeaten on the first day.

However, it was Walukuba who were the standout team of the day after causing a major upset, defeating the reigning 7s champions and hosts—Hippos, and overcoming a tough Mongers side, to emerge top of their pool.

The hosts found themselves on the wrong end of an impressive display of determination by Walukuba, who were able to come off with a stunning 10-07 victory over their fellow Jinja based rivals.

Meanwhile, the women’s category saw the two Lady Cranes select sides—Lady Cranes 1 and 2, dominate the core teams to both progress into the semifinals.

Heading into day two, the stage is now set for an exhilarating knockout round to determine the ultimate winner of the first circuit now dubbed the Stone City 7s.

Joining Walukuba In the quarterfinals, will be; Hippos, KOBs, Impis, Pirates, Rhinos, Heathens, and Buffaloes, who all emerged from their respective pools.

Avengers and Thunderbirds will play Lady cranes 1 and 2 respectively in the women’s semifinals.
