KIU Titans beat UPDF Tomahawks 64-58 in the National Basketball League on Sunday at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

Leading 38-29 at halftime, KIU had to fend off UPDF’s second half rally before sealing what proved to be a hard fought win.

The Tomahawks cut the deficit to six points at the end of the third quarter to set up a tense fourth.

And after opening exchanges of the last quarter, Michael Kojo converted both free-throws to tie the game before Felix Mukunzi’s laid up for UPDF to lead by two points with eight minutes on the clock.

But KIU Titans fought back into the contest before holding onto their lead down the stretch.

Amisi Saidi Danny scored 18 points while Denis Balungu and Isaiah Mabeny Ater added 10 points each for Julius Lutwama’s side.

Mukunzi’s game high 20 points proved not enough for the Tomahawks despite support from Michael Kojo and Andrew Gang who had 13 and 11 points respectively.

KIU, despite missing 14 of their 20 attempts from three-point range, returned to winning ways having suffered a 57-68 defeat against Nam Blazers in their previous game.

The win is the 14th for KIU Titans in 17 games while UPDF has just five wins (5-14) in 19 games this season.

The League, just like the Lower Divisions, take a break until August 9 to allow the Basketball Fraternity support the Gazelles in their Afrobasket adventure in Kigali, Rwanda.
