Uganda Sevens Final Squad For Olympic Qualifier Named

Uganda Sevens Head Coach Tolbert Onyango has named the final squad for the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The two-day tournament due September 16-17, will act as a qualification pathway for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Four players have been released from the team that has been in camp – Timothy Mugisha, Aaron Tukei, Karim Arinaitwe and Mark Osuna are the players who have not made the cut.

No Michael Wokorach and Timothy Kisiga who were not even summoned in the initial training squad – The duo were part of the squad that won the title last year at Kyadondo.

The team will be captained by Ian Munyani who will be assisted by Aaron Ofoyrwoth and Adrian Kasito in that order.

Uganda who beat Zimbabwe in last year’s final, must repeat those heroics if they are to get a single ticket to Paris.

They are in Pool C alongside hosts Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso and Algeria.

It promises to be a tough one with powerhouse South Africa in the competition having failed to secure direct tickets to the Paris Olympics after finishing outside the top four in the recently concluded season.

They are in Pool A alongside Madagascar, Tunisia and Cape Verde. Pool B has Kenya, Zambia, Namibia, and Nigeria.

The tournament winner qualifies to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, while the second and third-placed teams will qualify for the 2024 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament.

Also, the two finalists from the tournament will earn a spot in the 2024 Challenger Series.
