Uganda’s duo of Joshua Tukamuhebwa and Fathia Mawanda have reached the quarterfinals of the ongoing Africa Boxing Olympic Qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal.
Captain Tukamuhebwa eased past Gabon’s Ndjinga Clinton Farlo in a fight that was stopped by the Referee (RSC) in the second round in the Men’s 63.5kg Round of 16 encounter.
Tukamuhebwa who also knocked out Ethiopia’s Alem Gebremariam in the Round of 32, will return to action on Wednesday.
And his opponent is Tunisia’s Dridi Mehdi who advanced to the quarterfinals after a walkover by Jorgito Ca of Guinea Bissau.
Mawanda on the other hand, rolled over homeboy Sow Pape Mamadou (Senegal) in the Men’s 51kg fight.
He won the fight unanimously (5-0), with four judges calling it 29-28 while Kazakhstan judge Yermek Suiyenish called it 30-27 still in Mawanda’s favour.
It’s a remarkable achievement for Mawanda who was fighting on the international stage for the very first time, and it came against a fighter from a host country!
Mawanda will return to action on Wednesday against Ghana’s Allotey Theophilus Kpakpo who beat South Africa’s Mtintelwa Sinovuyo 5-0.
The tournament has a Rest day on Tuesday September 12th and then resume from Wednesday to Friday for the crucial final three days of the competition.
