Vanessa Karungi: Crested Cranes Goalkeeper Undergoes Surgery

Uganda National Senior Women’s football team (Crested Cranes) goalkeeper Vanessa Karungi has opened up about the tough times she’s been going through as a player after being on the sidelines for a while now.

Karungi, who turns out for FC Nordejælland in Denmark has had reccuring nasty injuries within the past few months, one coming after another.

The goalkeeper tore her Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), just weeks after sustaining a deep cut on her head.

Karungi recounted; “On 15th Feb, I happened to partially tear my MCL and fully tear my ACL during a practice match which is not the best experience for any athlete as you know.

“To be sincere with all of you, it’s been quite a tough period as I had to wait for my MCL to heal so as to undergo my ACL surgery,” the goalkeeper revealed.

“I was so heartbroken and disappointed cause I had just returned back with the team after my concussion incident,” the Ugandan player admitted.

“I had a successful surgery this morning and your girl is back on that path to full recovery.”

“I obviously know that it won’t be an easy one but I am more than determined to overcome this next challenge.”

“I am so lucky that God has surrounded me with people that have shown nothing but pure love and support through the first step of my long journey to recovery.”

Before tearing her ligaments, Karungi had sustained a worrying head injury in November 2023, Cameroon, when she got a deep cut above her left eye.
