Nanyondo Set For Continental Tour In Nairobi As Chelimo Opts Out

After the Doha Diamond League, Winnie Nanyondo now turns to Nairobi World Athletics Continental Tour where she has been invited to compete in 1500m race on October 3, 2020.

Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo who was earlier entered for 5,000m event has meanwhile opted out on account of unfitness.

The number of Ugandan runners for the Continental competition however remain six invitees with Nanyondo’s inclusion.

Nanyondo last week featured in Doha Diamond League finishing 5th overall in 800m.

The organisers of the Continental Tour series have the invitational discretion basing on athlete’s performance in the season to select participants for the competition.

The Uganda athletes now comprise;

*Men – Abel Sikowo (3000mSC), Samuel Kibet (5000m).
*Women – Leni Shida (200m/400m), Winnie Nanyondo (1500m), Peruth Chemutai (3000mSC) and Sarah Chelangat (5000m).

Apart from the World Tour offering platform to prepare for 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the Ugandan athletes will also contest for the total prize money purse of 200,000 US dollars for top performers.

It is also an opportunity for Ugandan athletes to increase the number of high quality competitive opportunities available for the country’s best athletes and also earn world rankings.

World Athletics (WA) last November launched a series of the world’s best one-day Continental invitational meetings outside the Diamond League organized across Asia, Europe, North America and Africa with Nairobi hosting the final serie.
