New Dates For Cecafa U23 Championship Set

The start of this year’s Cecafa U23 Championship has been set to July 17, 2021 in Bahir Dar Ethiopia.

The tourney was to kickoff on July 3, 2021 but it has been pushed for two weeks.

The draws for this year’s competition were scheduled to be held on Friday, June 25 via Zoom but it didnt come to fruition.

The meeting attended by seven General Secretaries from CECAFA Member Associations via zoom, has decided on these new dates due to ongoing Covid19 situation.

South Sudan for example, have their technical bench and some of their players currently quarantined in Doha, Qatar after attending the Arab FIFA Cup and will only travel on the 7th of July.

“The League in Tanzania is also still ongoing and will be completed on 18th July 2021 with some players only being available to travel after it is complete,” statement from Cecafa further explains.

Uganda are the defending champions after they beat Eritrea 3-0 in Kampala in 2019 to clinch a record extending 15th CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup title.

The tournament was not held last year, 2020, due to Covid19.

All the CECAFA members except Rwanda and Somalia had confirmed participation.
Teams that have confirmed participation – Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, DR Congo.
