2021/22 StarTimes UPL To Kick Off With Regulated Fans Entry

Fans are set to return in the stadiums when the 2021/22 StarTimes Uganda Premier League gets underway on October 15 2021.

Due to Covid19 pandemic, the best part of last season was played behind closed doors as the league organisers moved to follow SOPs.

The 2021/22 season will kick off on October 15 2021 before the first round ends on January 9 2022.

FUFA CEO Decolas Kizza said that about 200 fans will be allowed to access stadiums, but clubs must seek written permission from the Federation.

“We shall have a maximum of 200 spectators access stadiums when the season starts,” started Kizza. “All SOPs must be observed in accordance to the government directives on Covid19.”

“The fans will only be allowed with written permission from FUFA to Clubs. Its not a blanket clearance, we must give these clubs guidance to follow. These fans will be restricted in their movement at the stadium if they do not have negative PCR tests.”

Kizza said that the restrictions on fans is a move by the Federation to mitigate the spread of Covid19.

He added: “Its our wish that everyone is vaccinated twice as the Federation.”

StarTimes, the league’s official broadcaster, has vowed to air about 120 games including the Big League this season.

StarTimes Marketing Manager Ismail Lule commented: “We hope to have the season played to completion so that we fulfill our broadcasting target.”

Lule also confirmed that Express will begin their title defence against newly promoted Arua Hill SC at Betway Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

He also confirmed that English Commentary will be the default language on Sanyuka during most games. Options for Luganda and Luo will also be available especially on StarTimes Mobile Apps.

The league games will kickoff at 3pm so that fans and stakeholders can beat the curfew.

UPL board member Peter Kibazo said that the recently released draft fixture is owing to change, with Busoga United yet to get clearance from the Federation after lodging in an appeal.
