Kawempe Mile Run: All Set For Inaugural Edition

The first edition of the Kawempe Mile run will be held this Saturday, February 26 at Blend Gardens in Bwaise.

The run aims at raising more awareness against Gender based violence and abuse in Sports.

This violence is directed against athletes of the specified gender disproportionately.

The organisers also seek to inspire many kids and adults all around Uganda to take up middle distance running all the way to 400m.

Uganda Athletics National team coach Moses Asonye is confident that they can spot talents from Kawempe.

“We have a lot of talent that goes to waste in these distances,” said Asonye.

“Many athletes think of going straight to cross country, road racing or the 5000m and 10000m but there’s a lot of talent if nurtured well or shown the light that could tap into their full potential.

“Kawempe has always had plenty of talented footballers, Netballers, Boxers, and Volleyball players. It can also produce world class athletes but there’s never been a race or a big athletics event to attract or inspire many of the ghetto kids to the sport of athletics.”

Organisers have waived registration fee, while Sh1m is at stake for the winners in senior category.
