Falcons put up a good fight but it was not enough as they suffered a routine loss against Victoria University in the NBL on Saturday at YMCA in Wandegeya.
The six-time winners remain rooted at the bottom and are yet to pick a single win this season in 16 games!
Kenneth Mesho laid up to put Falcons 61-60 and the side were 30 seconds away from their first win before Victoria University cut the celebrations short.
Maker Mayen and Ronald Ayume scored quickly to put Victoria University back in control, 63-60, and when Henrison Mbaziira’s laid up at the other end to put Falcons just a point adrift of Victoria, it was little too late
But this was a commendable fight for Falcons and their best effort so far this season.
However, the win looks close but still too far.
Team manager, day’s coach Douglas Uwizera, will feel this was the day they should have got the monkey off their back after they led 28-24 at halftime.
But Ayume who scored a game high 21 points, kept Victoria University in the contest before the side ran away with the win down the stretch.
Mayen and Nyong Marrier added 13 points each, with the latter adding as many rebounds.
Mesho scored a team high 19 points and 20 rebounds, Henrison Mbaziira and Mark Ngobi scored 11 and 14 points.
Falcons new signing Veteran Norman Blick finished the game without a point, on a 0-for-1 shooting, but Falcons will remain hopeful that better days are coming ahead and they can still turn things around to beat the drop.
It’s the fourth win for newcomers Victoria University who replaced Sharing Youth in top flight.
Nam Blazers game against Ndejje University Angels has been postponed after rain interrupted the day’s schedule, and the match will be played on Sunday at 6pm to replace Oilers’ fixture.
City Oilers’ games are postponed until further notice as the seven-time champions have four players on the National team (Silverbacks) currently in Cairo for World Cup Qualifiers due next month in Kigali.
