In a riveting clash at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Egypt showcased resilience, twice recovering from a deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against Ghana in the Group C encounter of the Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.

Ghana took the lead early on when Mohammed Kudus, introduced into the starting line-up, unleashed a powerful strike from distance, courtesy of Abdul Salis Samed’s assist, giving the Black Stars a 1-0 advantage.

Egypt, however, seized on a defensive lapse from Inaki Williams, with Omar Marmoush capitalizing on the opportunity to level the score at 1-1 in the 69th minute.

The pendulum swung back in Ghana’s favor as Kudu, having a standout performance, restored the lead with a well-curled shot from the edge of the penalty box, making it 2-1 in the 71st minute.

Undeterred, the Pharaohs responded swiftly, with Trezeguet Mostafa Mohammed finding the net just two minutes later, ensuring a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

“It’s a mixed feeling. As a forward, you want your goals to have an impact on the result. We made careless mistakes. Now we’ll have to get back to work, win the next one and then see what happens,” said Kudus.

“We are not out. The objective remains the same, which is to take trophy home.”

Ghana, with only one point from two games, faces Mozambique in their final group stage match on Monday, January 22, aiming to advance in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
