In a thrilling encounter at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday, Nigeria emerged victorious, defeating Cameroon 2-0 in the 2023 AFCON Round of 16 clash.

Cameroon initiated the action with a promising start as Zambo Anguissa connected with Karl Toko Ekambi, whose shot was skillfully blocked by Nigeria’s William Ekong.

The Super Eagles seemed to take an early lead when Ajayi turned in Ademola Lookman’s 9th-minute corner, but VAR intervention disallowed the goal due to offside.

Undeterred, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Victor Osimhen capitalized on a defensive error, setting up Lookman for a composed finish past Cameroon’s goalkeeper Onana.

The Super Eagles continued to dominate, and Lookman struck again just before full time, converting his own through ball to secure a convincing 2-0 victory.

With this result, Nigeria advances to the quarter-finals, where they will face Angola.

Meanwhile, Cameroon bows out of the competition at the Round of 16 stage. Nigeria’s clinical performance in this heavyweight bout highlights their quality and experience, suggesting a potential end to their prolonged quest for a fourth continental title.
