Uganda’s girls U18 basketball team, the Junior Gazelles, will face off with Angola on Wednesday in the Quarterfinals of the ongoing 2022 FIBA U18 Afrobasket championship.

Uganda finished third in Pool A behind Mali and Madagascar, with their only win coming against the host nation after losses against Algeria and Mali.

Angola on the other hand, finished second in Pool B with two wins and a loss that came against Egypt in their opener.

“I think we could have done better with Algeria but we came short,” assistant coach Rogers Sserunyigo told The-SportsNation.

“We made too many turnovers and failed to finish easy baskets.

“For the loss against Mali, we surely had no chance against them, they have mastered these junior levels.”

Uganda has lost their last two meetings with Angola – They were beaten 63-29 on 11 August 2018 in U18 Afrobasket championship and had lost 52-36 back in October 2008.

It’s now a clean slate for Uganda and Angola and the sides face off for a place in the semis.

“Angola always has good juniors. It’s definitely a tough one and we will be hard for us to escape. But we are ready to try our level best.”
